COMMUNITY MUSIC KONFERENZ.

The Community Music Konferenz highlighted community music in Germany and its potential socioeconomic impact, attracting 50 speakers from around the world and 300 attendees.

My task was to create media to help spread the key messages of the event to the organisations and institutions on whose support and funding community music practice depends:

Community music is a relatively new field in Germany, but it’s already highly organised, integrated and professional

Community music has great potential for socioeconomic impact, so it’s worth funding!

The project produced seven videos: a mini-documentary based on interviews with luminaries from the field, supported by event footage, three shorter versions covering each section of the main film and three vertical shorts along similar lines.

To get the most out of the event and a small budget, we put the emphasis on careful preparation and planning. We used a fast, lightweight setup for good coverage. Careful selection of interviewees and a detailed shoot plan helped us to avoid missing key moments or overshooting.

The Community Music Konferenz was a partnership between Community Music Netzwerk, Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, Konzerthaus Dortmund and Paper Lantern Collective.

BETWEEN THE LINES.

English Theatre Düsseldorf (ETD) brings professional English-language theatre and community theatre workshops to international audiences.

We made these videos to promote their Between the Lines poetry and spoken word workshops, in which teenagers from local schools took part in four days of collaborative activities and writing.

The goal of the videos was to show what an important personal development experience the workshops had been for the kids, empowering them to express themselves creatively with confidence, increasing their self-understanding through personal exploration and reflection and encouraging them to collaborate openly with their peers.

We also wanted to show that underlying that experience was the workshop facilitators’ skill in creating a safe space in which the students felt comfortable to open up and share their stories with each other.

Naturally the shoot was squeezed into a hectic schedule, so I took a simple and flexible approach. It was impossible to know beforehand who’d be willing to appear on camera or to prepare the interviewees. So I brought a short list of simple questions to get them talking and give them the space for the key themes to emerge.

ETD will use the videos extensively as a website testimonial, for social media promotion and to attract funding for future projects. ETD is a long-term client with various projects in the pipeline.

AUTHENTIC.

I try to make content that is professional and engaging but above all... authentic. I want you and your people to be at the heart of the project, so we can develop a unique message about you, your organisation or event.

COLLABORATIVE.

I have an unusual background for a visual artist, but I think it really helps me get the best out of every project because it means I like to work very collaboratively. I think it's important to really understand your situation and what you want to achieve first. Then together we can find creative ways to get that for you, regardless of budget.
